Day 96 (August 28)

6 miles

The things you learn (and get to practice) while making breakfast for your kids - mix some pancake batter, and try to flip a pancake in a frying pan. As you might know, this is not easy. You start by rocking the pan to create a momentum that will allow the pancake to slide up and down the sides. Once you have built up the momentum, you flip the pancake into the air with enough force to turn it over, and then you catch it in the pan.

If you are timid and concerned that your pancake will fly too high and miss the pan, you

won't throw it high enough to turn it over. When it lands, you'll have is a mess. On the other hand, when you use too much force, your pancake will probably land on the stove, outside of the pan - or stick to the ceiling (at least temporarily).

When you flip a pancake, you need to pause first and get in touch with the state of mind that

gives you the perfect strength, perfect control, and perfect courage. You need to balance your timidity "what if I make a mess.." with over-aggressiveness "just watch the way I flip this flapjack!"

That inner state during the moment just before drawing the pancake high in the air to make

that perfect landing is the "the ultimate state". When you find that state of mind, think about how to re-create it without it pan in hand - that perfect balance and a killer instinct.
