I thought about it today while running: why waste time proving over and over how great you are, when you could be instead focusing on getting better, right? And you can always be getting better... Why hide deficiencies instead of overcoming them? “... besides when you already know you're deficient, you have nothing to lose by trying... and that's FREEDOM!!
Why look for people who will brush your self-esteem and say "how wonderful you are" instead of the ones who will challenge you ("irk" you enough :)) to make you want to stretch yourself?
The "passion for stretching yourself" (whether self-induced or brought onto you by someone else) and sticking to it, even (or especially) when it’s not going well, is the hallmark of the most awesome people I've ever met in my life...
So is the little micro-cosm of running I've created for myself, I just do it... And do it with tremendous drive and enthusiasm (you should see me), pushing that one "extra bit" of better daily - and it will lead where it will lead.
