This morning news - on CNN front page article was a reminder.. where I could have been.
My mother told me what happened to her last week.. on her way to/from church (she was putting a candle for me, bless her soul... thinking about me and my silly problems), she was wearing a red scarf and she forgot her typical (black) mask at home. So she put a spare white mask that happened to be in her purse... some time later she was stopped by secret police... why? red-white-red are the colors of opposition...
When you have to watch your back, and be afraid that even an innocent combination of colors could potentially land you in jail... it puts everything else in perspective. They let her go, and she didn't tell anything to my father.
It's been many years since I've left, yet there is a constant reminder where I could have been, and what could have happened to me. It's a good reminder. I don't take it for granted. It is also a reminder that things like speaking your mind, building something new, advancing yourself, living the way you want to, listening to the music you want to, running every day... it is all such privilege - truly 1st world problems vs. 3rd world problems.
I thought about it while I ran today... and my shirt was red and my gloves were white.
