When you are in a FUNK
Almost every person (runners too) I know goes through a period when she or he feel like quitting. I certainly include myself in that category (every single day I face this when running, when running hard, when running uphill, when running tired, when running hungry, when running sore).
What's ironic is that the tools that help make you run better - focus, effort, attention, hard work - definitely do not provide the answer to getting out of a funk, I find the best way to get your mojo back is to lose all of that, forget results and run free. And forget that it needs to be painful or that's it's punishment. If you do it for the same reason you did as a child... you will "connect" to it without wanting anything in return. You will do it for the same reason you did it as a child - for enjoyment. And the same applies to other things in life.
So turn off the phone, watch, turn on music that makes your soul sing. Run a trail you have never run before. Pick a different large loop that keeps you motivated to get out of those bad-weather days. Do all and any of these things often enough, and you'll remember why you started in the first place - it's fun.
Today was a good run. Thank you for this day.
